Why we shouldn’t give gluten to kids: Part 2

wheat

This is the second part of a two part series, check out the first post if you missed it, about when Dr. Davis asked his followers on Wheat Belly Facebook page:

Parents: What have you noticed in your CHILDREN who have gone wheat- and grain-free?

Our 5 1/2 year old is no longer falling asleep unexpectedly during the day. She is in better spirits, has no more sudden mucus-like bowel movements or diarrhea, has no more rashes on bottom or backs of arms and is overall soooo much better!!

Why we shouldn’t give gluten to kids! Part 1

bread

It makes me sad to hear about children with health problems; many of them are so young and already struggling with health issues. Read some of the quotes below for answers to why many of our children, and many of us, should not eat grains. Tell me afterwards; do you think becoming grain-free is a fad diet or is it a lifestyle worth trying for a period of time to see what will happen?

On October 21st Dr. Davis asked his Wheat Belly followers:

Parents: What have you noticed in your CHILDREN who have gone wheat and grain free?

Here are their comments:

My daughter went grain free in 8th grade. She lost 50 pounds, cut minutes off her mile time, and hardly ever gets sick. She is a senior now and has maintained her weight and her grain free lifestyle. She has not cheated in 4 years.

Smoking facts Part 2

cigarettes

In the previous post I gave you some rather shocking facts about smoking. This time I will give you the geometry part of smoking, which they did in my daughters’ high school class.

If we estimate that a pack of cigarettes cost $4 per pack.

The cost if you smoke one pack per day for:

1 year $1460
5 years $7300
10 years $14,600
20 years $29,200
30 years $43,800

The cost if you smoke two packs per day for:

1 year $2920
5 years $14,600
10 years $29,200
20 years $58,400
30 years $87,600

The cost if you smoke three packs per day for:

1 year $4380
5 years $21,900
10 years $43,800
20 years $87,600
30 years $131,400

A lot of money! Oops, I forgot to include the medical bills.

Even worse, if you buy a pack of cigarettes in Sweden you have to nearly double it because here a pack is about $7.50. Imagine saving $2737 instead of smoking one pack a day in one year or saving $8212 instead of smoking three packs a day in one year.

Smoking facts part 1

lunga-rökare

I have told you that it is very dangerous to smoke, haven’t I? But, did you know these smoking facts from the U.S.A.?

• 20% of high school kids are currently smokers
• 4000 kids try smoking for the first time each day
• Of the 1000 kids who start smoking each day, 35% will die from smoking
• 15.5 million kids are exposed to second hand smoke at home each day
• 800 million packs of cigarettes are smoked by kids each year
• 427,000 people die each year (1,170 each day) from their own cigarette smoking habit
• Up to 73,000 die each year as a result of second hand smoke
• Over 6 million kids will die in their lifetime as a result of cigarette smoking illness
• 8.6 million people currently suffer from a smoking-caused illness
• $157 BILLION is spent on health care treating smoking related illnesses
• $5 BILLION is spent on health care treating second hand smoke related illnesses
• Almost $100 BILLION is lost in productivity each year
• Some cigarettes contain over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer
• Smoking harms nearly EVERY organ in the body

When we lived in the U.S. my high school daughter came home with these facts. One dedicated geometry teacher had spent a surprising lesson telling the class about the danger of tobacco. Hopefully it made and impact on them.

If you are a smoker, try to stop smoking as soon as possible for your own health. See to it that the kids around you stay away from smoking and won’t be exposed to second hand smoke. This will help them avoid their lungs becoming like the ones above.

Next time I will let you know about the geometry part of smoking.

CARB-LOADED – A CULTURE DYING TO EAT

This is a trailer of another new film about carbs called Carb-loaded – a culture dying to eat.

I think it is high time we start talking about TOFI’s; people that are thin on the outside and fat (and often diabetic) on the inside. And, the danger of having elevated blood sugar (and insulin) levels around the clock.

Do you eat every five hours because you’re hungry again or after two and a half hours because your blood sugar is getting low?
